Texan BBQ Candied Nuts are a perfect sweet and smoky snack featuring a crunchy, caramelized coating made with brown sugar and bold BBQ spices. These nuts are baked to create a deliciously sticky glaze that balances sweetness and spice, making them an ideal treat for parties or a flavorful topping for salads and desserts.

Ingredients

Scale

Mixed Nuts

  • 2 cups mixed nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts, cashews)

Coating

  • 1 large egg white
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) to prepare for baking the nuts.
  2. Prepare Nuts: In a mixing bowl, lightly beat the egg white until frothy. Add the mixed nuts and toss to coat them evenly.
  3. Mix Spice Coating: In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Coat Nuts with Spice Mixture: Sprinkle the spice and brown sugar mixture over the egg-white-coated nuts, mixing thoroughly to ensure all nuts are evenly coated.
  5. Bake Nuts: Spread the coated nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even caramelization.
  6. Cool Down: Remove the nuts from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet. The coating will harden and become crispy as it cools.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper quantity to control the level of spiciness.
  • Store cooled candied nuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
  • Ensure stirring periodically during baking to avoid burning and promote even caramelization.
