Cowboy Butter is a flavorful, herb-infused compound butter perfect for enhancing grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or as a dipping sauce. Combining fresh herbs, garlic, mustard, and a blend of spices, this versatile butter adds a zesty, buttery kick to any dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter Base

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened

Flavorings

  • 1 tablespoon coarse Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Gather all the ingredients and soften the unsalted butter to room temperature for easy mixing.
  2. Mix the Butter and Flavorings: In a medium bowl, whisk together the softened butter, Dijon mustard, chopped chives, parsley, thyme, minced garlic, lemon juice, paprika, kosher salt, pepper, cayenne, and crushed red pepper flakes until fully combined. You can also pulse the ingredients in a food processor for quicker blending.
  3. Shape the Butter: Scoop the mixed butter onto a piece of plastic wrap. Roll it into a log shape, pressing and shaping firmly as you go, ensuring the butter is fully wrapped in plastic.
  4. Refrigerate: Twist the ends of the plastic wrap and refrigerate the butter log until firm, typically 2 hours or up to overnight, to allow flavors to meld and the butter to solidify.
  5. Use the Butter: For compound butter usage, slice as needed to top grilled meats or vegetables. Alternatively, for a dipping sauce, melt the butter by microwaving in 20-second intervals, stirring between each until fully melted and smooth.
  6. Storage: Store any unused Cowboy Butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness and flavor.

Notes

  • Use softened butter to ensure even mixing with the herbs and spices.
  • The butter can be frozen for up to 3 months if wrapped tightly.
  • Adjust the cayenne and red pepper flakes to control the spiciness.
  • Great as a finishing touch on steaks, corn on the cob, or roasted potatoes.
  • You can substitute fresh herbs with dried herbs if fresh are unavailable, but reduce quantities by half.
