Cinnamon French Toast Bites are bite-sized, crispy, and sweet morsels made from cubed bread dipped in a cinnamon-spiced egg mixture, pan-fried until golden, and coated in cinnamon sugar. Perfect for a fun breakfast treat or snack served with maple syrup for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread (1″/2.5cm thick)
  • 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Pinch of salt

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

Cooking

  • 3 tbsp butter, separated

To Serve

  • Maple syrup (for dipping, not optional!)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread Cubes: Cut the crusts off the 4 slices of slightly stale white bread. Then, cut each slice into 9 equal cubes to ensure even cooking and bite-sized portions.
  2. Mix the Egg Bath: In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/4 cup milk, and a pinch of salt until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow bowl, combine 1/4 cup white sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder, mixing well to create the coating mixture.
  4. Melt Butter: Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Be careful not to let the butter brown, as this affects the taste.
  5. Dip and Cook First Half: Quickly toss half of the bread cubes into the egg mixture. Shake off any excess egg with your hands, then place the cubes into the buttered pan. Use a wooden spoon to sauté, turning the cubes to brown all sides evenly. This process should take about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: Remove the cooked bread cubes from the pan and immediately toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat. Then transfer the coated cubes to a plate.
  7. Repeat for Remaining Cubes: Melt the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter in the pan. Repeat the dipping, pan-frying, and coating process with the remaining bread cubes.
  8. Serve: Serve the cinnamon French toast bites immediately with warm maple syrup on the side for dipping. Enjoy them fresh for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread as it absorbs the egg mixture better without becoming too soggy.
  • Do not allow the butter to brown or burn in the pan to maintain a clean, buttery flavor.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the bites crispy and warm; leftover bites may become soggy.
  • Maple syrup is essential to complement the cinnamon sugar coating and enhance sweetness.
  • For a healthier option, you may substitute white bread with whole wheat or gluten-free bread.
