Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, salted, room temp (112 g)
  • 1 cup sugar (200 g)
  • 1 egg

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (133 g)
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped apple pieces (100 g)
  • ½ cup toasted pecan pieces (53 g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to ensure it’s ready for baking the brownies.
  2. Toast Pecans: In a small pan, toast the pecan pieces over medium heat until they become fragrant, about 3-5 minutes, then set them aside to cool completely. This enhances their flavor.
  3. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks approximately ½ inch in size for even distribution in the batter.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, beat the room temperature butter and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, which helps incorporate air for a tender brownie texture.
  5. Add Egg: Add the egg to the creamed butter and sugar, mixing again until fully combined and smooth.
  6. Combine Dry Ingredients: Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon into the bowl. Mix gently just until combined to avoid overworking the batter.
  7. Fold in Apples and Pecans: Add the chopped apples and cooled toasted pecans to the batter. Mix well; the batter will be sticky and wet due to the moisture from the apples.
  8. Bake: Pour and press the batter evenly into a buttered 8×8 inch baking dish or one lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Oven times vary; it took about 35 minutes in this case.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before slicing into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of ice cream.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a nice balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • Ensure pecans are fully cooled before mixing to avoid melting the butter.
  • Do not overmix the batter once flour is added to keep brownies tender.
  • Check doneness starting at 30 minutes to avoid overbaking.
  • Brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
